Zambrano no-hits Astros in return

All the elements were in Carlos Zambrano's favor.

Zambrano pitched the first no-hitter for the Chicago Cubs in 36 years, returning from a sore rotator cuff to shut down the Houston Astros 5-0 Sunday night in a game relocated because of Hurricane Ike.

"I guess I'm back!" Zambrano woofed.

Pitching for the first time since Sept. 2, and cheered on by thousands of Cubs fans, Zambrano stopped a Houston team that had not played since Thursday. The storm forced baseball to move two games from Texas to Miller Park and the weary Astros arrived only hours before the first pitch.

The Cubs, meanwhile, faced a short bus ride. Plenty of their faithful followed them up I-94, once again turning the Brewers' ballpark into "Wrigley North."

This was baseball's first neutral-site no-hitter, the Elias Sports Bureau said.

"It was a long travel day and Hurricane Ike," Astros manager Cecil Cooper said. "That's what I put it on. That and having two days off. I'm not saying he wasn't good."

Zambrano, known for his emotional displays on the mound, kept himself in control until striking Darin Erstad to finish off the gem.

Zambrano (14-5) dropped to his knees and pointed to the sky with both hands after getting Erstad to swing and miss for his season-high 10th strikeout. The big right-hander was immediately mobbed on the mound by his teammates.

"I'm a little confused right now," the three-time All-Star said. "I still can't believe it. It's a great feeling, a feeling that you can't describe."

The crowd of 23,441 erupted in a wild ovation after chanting "Let's go Z!" throughout the final inning.

Red Sox trade Manny to Dodgers

Manny Ramirez has been traded to the Dodgers in a three-team blockbuster, pending the approval of the commissioner's office, according to a source with knowledge of the deal.

Pirates outfielder Jason Bay is headed to the Red Sox. The Pirates will receive Andy LaRoche and right-hander Bryan Morris from the Dodgers and outfielder Brandon Moss and releiver Craig Hansen from the Red Sox.

The Red Sox will pay all of the approximately $7 million remaining on Ramirez's contract.

Ramirez should provide a major boost to the Dodgers' offense, but his arrival will add to the crowd in the Dodgers' outfield, which already includes Andre Ethier, Matt Kemp, Juan Pierre and Andruw Jones.

It is possible the Dodgers sent the Pirates an outfielder in the deal. The names are not confirmed.

Manny's not headed to the Packers? Then how 'bout the Marlins?

Earlier this afternoon, the Marlins were said to be holding a slim chance of pulling off a trade for Manny Ramirez.

But after seeing the sign he held up during tonight's game with the Angels (pictured in the screen grab to your right) and then reading the bellyache du jour below, I'd be willing to bet that motivated sellers on Miami's Star Island might be able to soon unload their property on a newly-located Ramirez.*

The Palm Beach Post is reporting that a tentative three-way deal has been reached among the Red Sox, Marlins and Pirates and after Manny's comments from earlier today, it's not hard to see why Boston might have been forced to commit to a trade that might bring only Pittsburgh's Jason Bay plus unproven prospects in exchange for Ramirez's Hall of Fame talent.

"The Red Sox don't deserve a player like me," Ramirez said. "During my years here, I've seen how they [the Red Sox] have mistreated other great players when they didn't want them to try to turn the fans against them.

"The Red Sox did the same with guys like Nomar Garciaparra and Pedro Martinez, and now they do the same with me. Their goal is to paint me as the bad guy," Ramirez added. "I love Boston fans, but the Red Sox don't deserve me. I'm not talking about money. Mental peace has no price, and I don't have peace here."

Translation? "Trade me. I dare you."

Look, I've never understood the issues that Ramirez has with a city and fanbase that throws itself at its baseball stars, but I've always thought the Manny headache was one worth tolerating for the Red Sox. But with all this season's controversies, putting up with "Manny Being Manny" has changed and now it seems inevitable that Ramirez and Boston's 7+ season relationship will be over by Thursday's 4 p.m. ET trading deadline comes. (The Brett Favre and Green Bay soap opera is a different story.)
