The glamorous teams all eliminated, the Philadelphia Phillies and Tampa Bay Rays opened a most unexpected World Series on Wednesday night. Cole Hamels escaped trouble to win his fourth postseason start, Chase Utley hit a two-run homer in the first inning and the Phillies beat the Tampa Bay Rays 3-2. FULL STORY

Browns TE Winslow suspended one game

Less than 48 hours after Kellen Winslow voiced his displeasure with the Cleveland Browns organization, the team opted to discipline its Pro Bowl tight end.

The Browns suspended Winslow for one game without pay following his comments after Sunday's 14-11 loss to the Washington Redskins. Winslow was unhappy with the way the team and Browns general manager Phil Savage publicly handled his staph infection and said he felt like "a piece of meat." FULL STORY

Cowboys' Romo out Sunday, maybe longer

Tony Romo wanted to play in the Cowboys' loss to the Rams last Sunday, but his broken pinkie wasn't ready. It appears it won't allow him to play for at least another week as well.

Speaking on Terrell Owens' "Inside the Huddle" radio show on Tuesday night, the quarterback said he was disappointed yet feels sitting out Sunday's contest against the Buccaneers is the right decision.

Ive been a fan of Mr. Winslow since Miami and his Hurricane days, I think he just needs to focus on football and understand that with the glitz and the glamour you have to eat alot of humble pie and do and say all the right things even if you don't agree. Having just finished writing SLAM’s NBA Preview for SLAM issue 123 (on newsstands soon!), I spent weeks poring over every roster in the NBA, trying to make heads or tails (or knees and ankles) out of which teams in the NBA we need to keep an eye on this season. Here are my top five teams that should be improved during the 2008-09 NBA Season. Believe that.

1. The Charlotte Bobcats—This one’s a no-brainer. Not only are they finally getting over injuries to key players (Sean May, Adam Morrison and Gerald Wallace all missed significant minutes last year), but they’ve added Larry Brown as coach. LB’s tenure in New York with the Knicks might not have gone so well, but the man is one of the winningest coaches in basketball history. With Brown teaching and Jason Richardson and Emeka Okafor joining the aforementioned players, the Bobcats should finally be on the hunt.

2. The Portland Trailblazers—With the Sonics now gone for Oklahoma City, Portland is the only NBA franchise in the Pacific Northwest, and just as well, because they’re set up to be very good for a long time to come. With Greg Oden and Brandon Roy, the Blazers have a devastating inside-out combo in place. They’ve also stockpiled athletes, role players, veterans, youngsters…they’ve got it all.

3. The Milwaukee Bucks—Over the last few years, the Bucks have been slowly assembling a deep collection of talent: Michael Redd, Andrew Bogut, Charlie Villanueva. Now they add veteran swingman Richard Jefferson, who should help connect their inside and outside games. Most importantly, the Bucks brought in Scott Skiles as coach. The hyper-intense Skiles usually wears out his welcome after a while, but as long as they’re in that honeymoon period for the next few years, the Bucks will be a team to reckon with.

4. The Dallas Mavericks—Perhaps it’s strange to say a team that won 51 games last season will be better than last year, but I think this is a sure thing. New coach Rick Carlisle has an advantage over former coach Avery Johnson in that everyone on the team doesn’t hate him, and look for Carlisle to stress defense and coach to his player’s strengths, as opposed to trying to fit them into a style of play they may not excel at. (And keep an eye on Brandon Bass—he’s going to be a good one.)

5. The Philadelphia 76ers—Of course, adding Elton Brand through free agency is huge, because he immediately gives the Sixers one of the most powerful frontlines in the Eastern Conference. They also re-signed All-Star-in-waiting Andre Iguodala, and have a couple of younger guys ready for prime time (Louis Williams and Thaddeus Young). New GM Ed Stefanski has taken a promising situation and made it even better. These Sixers are going to give Boston a run for their rings in the Atlantic Division.

Elite XC, which produced seven of the 10 most-watched MMA matches in U.S. history on two CBS specials in recent months, will be closing its doors at the end of the week, leaving a roster of fighters, including top-draws Kimbo Slice and Gina Carano, looking for work in a constricted environment.

Elite XC joins the International Fight League and Bodog Fight as high-profile competitors to the industry leader, the Ultimate Fighting Championship, to fold during the past year.

With deals with CBS and Showtime, the latter a major shareholder, Elite XC had the exposure the other failed challengers lacked, but lost more than $55 million in its two years of operation. Its losses included having a bad television deal in the first year with Showtime, causing them to lose money on every show; losing millions on trying, and failing, to build a website that was designed to be a destination for the MMA community; and purchasing four promotions outright and putting money into a fifth...

Thats alright, I think Kimbo should go back to street fighting seriously anyways. Lion Heart has been one of my favorite movies as long as i can remember. Kimbo was the black Jean Claude Van Damm when he was knockin dudes out on cars. Haha. Go back to your roots homie.

Cards decline to exercise Mulder option

The Cardinals notified lefthanded pitcher Mark Mulder that his option for the
2009 season will not be exercised, and with that move the club did more than
conclude a contract.

It ended what became a cautionary tale.

Since signing a two-year, $13 million deal with the Cardinals, Mulder spiraled
through two seasons with a persistent and perplexing shoulder injury. The
Cardinals banked on him being a healthy and effective pitcher again, but
because of injuries the club did not get a win from the lefty during the
contract. Mulder came to personify a habit the Cardinals had of hoping for a
recovering pitcher's health.

Lessons have been learned.

"When we look at next year, I'm going to be very cautious not to allow us to go
down the same path that we did last season with players and injuries," general
manager John Mozeliak said. "You have to have some assurances. You're only one
injury away in this game, and I think we have to do what we can to minimize
that (exposure) as much as possible."

The Cardinals had until Nov. 15 to notify Mulder of their intention to buy him
out of the $11 million option for 2009. Mulder's agent, Gregg Clifton,
confirmed Monday that he recently received official notice from the Cardinals
of their intention to pay the $1.5 million buyout.

Scott Spiezio and Matt Clement also had options for 2009, and neither will be
exercised. Both were released this past season.

Similar to Mulder, Clement was coming off shoulder surgery when the Cardinals
signed him last winter. He did not recover enough of his strength to pitch in
the majors this season. After two rehab assignments and a brief experiment
throwing almost sidearm, Mulder did. He pitched 1 2/3 innings total. On July 9,
he made his only start of the season. He made 16 pitches against Philadelphia
before his twice surgically repaired shoulder collapsed.

He has not thrown a pitch since.

"We had very high expectations that Mark would come back and throw to the
capabilities he had when we acquired him from Oakland," Mozeliak said. "That
didn't happen."

Mulder won 16 games in 2005 for the Cardinals and then began a slow erosion of
his mechanics, his success and his health. Shoulder trouble limited him to 17
starts in 2006 and surgery in September ended his season. That winter he was
courted by the Cardinals and Texas, eventually signing for a return to St.
Louis. His deal, rich with incentives, guaranteed him $13 million, including
the $1.5 million buyout of the option.

His agent called the return "unfinished business," and the lefty said at the
time that "nobody in St. Louis has seen what I'm capable of doing."

The shoulder kept that from happening.

Mulder lost all three of his starts in 2007 before a second shoulder operation
was needed. The first operation refastened the labrum, but repair to the
rotator cuff did not take and needed to be addressed in another procedure. When
he returned from the second operation, he had his moments — including a couple
of successful minor-league starts — but he encountered persistent difficulty
getting his arm to rotate consistently enough to pitch.

His shoulder resisted his preferred delivery, causing his elbow to buckle and
his pitches to lose velocity, movement and control.
